handcar regatta, santa rosa

Sunday was the second annual handcar regatta in Santa Rosa's historic Railroad Square. The main event was a race featuring all manner of handmade railcars propelled by everything from classic handcranks to pedal power to man-sized hamster wheels to giant wind turbines. Here are a couple of the contestants, both the work of an outfit called Krank Boom Clank. The three-wheeler on the left is Murray the Fish. To the right is one of the front wheels of the Hennepin Crawler, featuring twin rubber tires for travel on ground, and a central groove for riding the rails. That's a flame thrower above the wheel.

More artwork from the day at urban sketchers.

sketchcrawl 24: chinatown/ north beach, sf

Another great day for a sketchcrawl in San Francisco. There was the Autumn Moon festival going on all over Chinatown, and an Italian American festa in North Beach. Good times.

urban sketchers

I've just become a correspondent over at urban sketchers.com. Urban Sketchers (USk) is the brainchild of Seattle journalist and illustrator Gabi Campanario and features location drawings and sketch reporting from all over the globe with new stuff posted daily. It's like a world-wide sketchcrawl that never ends. Check it out if you haven't already. Here's my introduction page. I'll be posting location drawings from northern California and anywhere else I travel to. Most of them I'll post here too, but a few may be USk exclusives.

Above is the Lone Star Industries cement factory in Oakland. I've often seen it in the distance from the freeway and thought of it as the "milk carton" building because of its distinctive shape.

the new yorker's eustace tilley contest 2009

My piece won:

This is the second year the New Yorker has invited the public to submit their own interpretations of the magazine's iconic mascot, Eustace Tilley, originally drawn by Rea Irvin for the magazine's first cover in 1925.

12 winners were chosen from over 300 submissions. You can see a slideshow of all 12 on the New Yorker's website here

My piece also appears, along with three others, in the current issue of the New Yorker on the stands now.

Two of my pieces won last year too. You can see those along with the rest of the 2008 winners at the New Yorker site as well.
